Red Ribbon Week

“Red Ribbon Week” or “Just Say No Week” is an annual event in the Fullerton School District where schools dedicate a week to teaching students how to make good choices and say “no to drugs”. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation and was started when drug traffickers in Mexico murdered DEA agent Kiki Camarena in 1985. Following this event, the tradition of displaying “red ribbons” as a symbol of intolerance toward the use of drugs began. The mission of the Red Ribbon Campaign is to present a unified and visible commitment towards the creation of a drug-free America. For Red Ribbon Week the first grade teachers have planned school wide activities as a way to show “school spirit”. Each day will focus on developing a positive character trait like caring, fairness, trustworthiness, responsibility, and respect. The idea is that if we develop positive character traits, we will be able to make better choices and hopefully avoid making poor choices.

  1. 1.Monday, October 19th the character trait for the day is “Caring”. The theme is, “We have caring hearts.” Students are encouraged to wear the color “red” on this day.

  2. 2.Tuesday, October 20th the character trait of the day is “Fairness.” The theme is, “We can be fair and share.” Students are encouraged to wear the color “orange” on this day. We will divide an orange into sections and share it with one another.

  3. 3.Wednesday, October 21st the character trait of the day is “Trustworthiness.” The theme is, “We can be a true blue friend and help our friends make good choices.” Students are encouraged to wear the school colors and/or Laguna Road t-shirts.

  4. 4.Thursday, October 22nd the character trait of the day is “Responsibility.” The theme is, “We can be responsible for our Earth, its resources, and people.” Students are encouraged to wear the color “green” on this day.

  5. 5.Friday, October 23rd the character trait of the day is “respect.” The theme is the “golden rule” - Treat others the way you would like to be treated.” Students are encouraged to wear the color “yellow” or “gold” on this day.

Wearing the color of the day is optional, it is a great way to show school spirit. Please join us in wearing our rainbow of good choices.
